The Securities Market Regulator

Three regulated markets operate in Greece. The Securities Market and the Derivatives Market, both operated by the Athens Exchange S.A. (the “ATHEX” or “X.A.” in Greek), and the Electronic Secondary Securities Market (“HDAT” or “Η.Δ.Α.Τ.” in Greek), operated by the Bank of Greece (the “BoG”). The Securities Market is divided into various categories at which the instruments traded thereon are classified according to their special characteristics.

Transactions on securities listed and traded on the Greek capital markets can be performed either on exchange or over the counter. For on exchange transactions investors need an intermediary bank or investment services firm to place and execute the transaction order with the relevant electronic trading systems as well as to hold the securities with the relevant depositaries.

Reasons why you should invest in Greece

Greece is a country strategically located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. It is known for its charm and beauty, and is the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, and major scientific and mathematical principles. Greece offers a good quality of life to its residents.

In 2013, Greece launched its Golden Visa Program. In return for an investment in real estate, a five-year residence permit that is renewable every five years is granted on condition that the initial qualifying investment continues to be held or an alternative qualifying real estate investment of the same value is made. No physical residence is required, and the real estate investment can be sub-let. The permit also grants the applicant the right to establish a business
in Greece.

The Schengen Area consists of 26 European countries, not including Cyprus and the UK. Holders of the Greek residency permit enjoy the same travel privileges with a Greek citizen in the Schengen Area. This means they can:

  • Travel directly from their country of origin to any Schengen country
  • Travel freely within the Schengen zone without lengthy customs’ checks
  • Reside to any other Schengen country up to a period of three months every six month period with the right of multiple entries

The economic crisis apart from hardships offers advantages. Non-EU – citizens have the chance to invest in Greece today that the real estate prices are at their lowest.

According to the Bank of Greece Monetary Policy report for the first quarter of 2013, from the beginning of the crisis in 2008, house prices have dropped by 29,4%. Combined with the recent tax reduction from 10% to 3% for property transfers, Greece is a unique opportunity for investors.

Greece is strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. This allows one to reach within 1 hour via airplane any of these continents and in 3 hours max to be in any part of Europe. In addition, several budget airlines like Easy Jet and Ryannair operate from the main airports of Greece travelling to most European capitals at low cost.

While in countries like Portugal, applicants for the residency permit are asked to also reside in the country for a minimum of 7 days in the first year, and 14 days in the next two- year period, in Greece there is no such requirement. So the holders of the Greek residency permit are not burdened with annual travel expenses in order to retain their rights.

Higher Education in Greece is both public and private. Although the entrance exams to the public higher education system can be tough, the education itself is free of cost.

Greece Company Formation

A capital contribution with a minimum value of EUR 400,000 to a company that has its registered office or establishment in Greece (with the exception of portfolio investment companies and real estate investment companies) for the acquisition of shares in a share capital increase or bonds that are, at the time of issue, admitted for trading on regulated markets or multilateral trading mechanisms that operate in Greece.

Greece Investment on property

Investment in real estate, land development, or infrastructure projects

The purchase of a single property or multiple properties to the value of at least EUR 250,000 is competitive when compared with other investment programs on the GRPI. The program provides flexibility regarding the type of real estate purchase that is made. Holders of a Golden Visa residence permit may apply for Greek citizenship following a period of seven years of lawful residence in Greece subject to meeting the legal requirements that include considerable time being spent in Greece and passing a language test. In addition to dependent children up to 21 years of age, dependent parents and dependent parents-in-law of the main applicant can be included in the same application.

Greece citizenship benefits

Applicants gain the right to live in Greece although there is no requirement to do this. With the residency card all family members will have freedom to travel to and throughout the EU Schengen visa zone with ease and without further visa applications. If the resident sells the property to another non-EU citizen, the Greek residency becomes transferable to the new investor.
